Dickson Children Centre
Sponsor a child, change a life
Dickson Children Centre (DCC) is a Christian Centre, who provides a home to orphans, abandoned and destitute boys and girls. The children are raised with Christian principles, get counseling and guidance, education, a job training and gets guidance to a independent living in the society.
The centre is founded by Joseph Mateka Munyasya (Kenyan) and his Dutch wife Ria in August 2004. It is named after Matheka’s father, who was killed in a tribal war in 1998. At the moment (2010) we have a population of 34 children in the age of 2 till 18 years old.
The target group are children who have nobody in their family, who can care for them, like orphans, abandoned and neglected children. These circumstances arise as a consequence of HIV/AIDS and as a result of natural deaths, divorce and poverty.
The management hopes to purchase a plot of land ( 5 acres or more ) in Mombasa West, where they can develop a children centre for over two hundred children. The centre will include: a children’s home, a school open to the community, a clinic, playground and a small farm.
To promote holistic growth of needy children through provision of shelter, healthcare, education, psychological, spiritual and rehabilitation services.
To have healthy, fully developed and God loving children, who will be the responsible citizens of tomorrow.
The overall goal of Dickson Children Centre is to provide a home that can offer a conducive and enabling environment of growth, development, protection and participation by provision of equal opportunities to the needy children.
The preferable age to admit children is below 7 years of age, but we have also taken in older children in need, who had nowhere else to go. We admit children who need protection and care, like orphans, abandoned and neglected children. The children are placed through the Children Department in Mombasa and are official committed to us by the children’s court. In emergency cases the children are only admitted on availability of space and beds available.
The team of 10 full time workers in Dickson Children Centre consists of Social Workers, House Mothers, an accountant, a cook, a nursery teacher and a driver. Next to that there are 2-4 volunteers and trainees, who assist in caring for the children and facilitate sport and creative activities.
The Primary School children go to school, on walking distance from the centre. In 2009 we were able to send the children to a better school, with the assistance of sponsors and their learning performance have increased significantly. The Secondary School children are in a boarding school; they only come to the centre in the holidays. Our youngest children are going to our own nursery school: the Dickson Academy.
Next to that extra-curriculum activities are organized like ball games, indoor games, singing and dancing exercises. Fun outings to the beach and educational tours are arranged in the holidays and regularly life skills training by youth counselors are taking place.
Guidance and counseling:
Every child has a mentor mother, who gives special attention to a child. The children can share their problems with their mentor and get personal attention. Next to that we have a counselor and a some housemothers, who have done a counseling course, they help the children to come to terms with their past, develop a good self image and focus on the future.
The children are raised with Christian values and principles. On Sunday the younger children go to the Sunday school and the teenagers go to the teenager classes. Every evening there is devotion time with singing and prayer. In the holidays Christian activities are organized, like camps, seminars etc.
Guardians and other relatives are allowed to come and visit the children in order to keep in touch with them. Next to that we organize family days two or three times a year, for which we invite the family members. Older children are allowed to visit their relatives, so they are aware of where they came from and their personal history.
Future plans for every child:
When the children have finished the Primary School, they are allowed to continue with the Secondary School, unless they are too old, their results are below level or they are not motivated to continue with their studies. For these boys and girls we look for a suitable training. The ones who have done the Secondary School will also do a job training, and afterwards we look for a suitable job for them. They will get guidance for 1 or 2 years, till they are able to function independently.
DICKSON ACADEMY NURSERY SCHOOL:
This is the nursery school of DCC. The nursery kids of DCC are taught here. From Januarty 2011 the has been opened for the community. The children have to learn reading and writing in the nursery school before they go to the Primary School. Many children of poor families cannot afford to go to the nursery school. Therefore we set up a sponsor program for these children. The other parents will pay school fees, so that the nursery school can function independently.
